The 5 Myths of Online Income for Virtual Assistants (and the Truth You Need to Hear!)

va

Have you considered becoming a Virtual Assistant but keep talking yourself out of it? Maybe you’ve convinced yourself that you don’t have the right skills, that it’s too expensive to get started, or that you’d have to work endless hours just to make a living.

That’s simply, not true.

There are five common myths about making money online as a VA, and today, I’m busting them one by one so you can confidently step into this opportunity.

Myth #1: You Need to Be an Expert

Many people believe they need to be highly skilled before they can land their first client. The truth? You don’t need to be an expert—you just need to start!

At the VA Academy, we help you take the skills you already have and refine them. We also teach you new, in-demand skills so that you can confidently attract clients who see your value. You don’t need years of experience, just a willingness to learn and take action.

Myth #2: You Need to Invest a Lot Upfront

Some people assume they need to spend thousands of dollars to become a VA. Again, Not true!

You can launch your VA business with less than $1,000—a fraction of what it costs to get a traditional college degree that often doesn’t even teach real-world skills. And if finances are a concern, payment plans make it even easier to get started.

Myth #3: You Need to Work Long Hours

Another misconception is that making money online means hustling around the clock. But as a VA, you set your own schedule.

When working with clients, you’ll establish your available hours upfront; and we will talk about boundary setting in the course. It is so helpful in raising your awareness about how we give away our power.

A little sneak preview: The key is to use that time wisely—working productively without distractions. No long hours are required—just focused, efficient work that fits your lifestyle.

Moms especially, worry about this myth. Young children and babies don’t get that we may need them to nap at their normal time and decide (on the day you MOST need them to give you a break!) that they are full of energy OR cranky and need attention!

That is all okay and we will talk about strategies to work around those bumps in your schedule.

Myth #4: You Have No Credibility

A big fear many new VAs have is, “Why would anyone hire me?”

That’s where certification comes in. When you graduate from the VA Academy, you’ll receive an official certification proving you’re fully qualified and ready to serve. This gives you instant credibility and reassurance for potential clients who are looking for a trained, professional VA.

Myth #5: You Have No Support

The idea of starting a business alone can feel intimidating—but you’re never alone as a VA.

The VA Academy includes access to our Ops Lounge—a private, in-house support group filled with experienced professionals who offer guidance, share wisdom, and answer your questions. Whether you need advice on landing clients, setting your rates, or handling tricky client situations, this community has your back.

The Truth? You CAN Do This!

If you’ve let these myths stop you from stepping into the world of online income, now you know the truth:

  1. You don’t need to be an expert—you just need training and confidence.
  2. You don’t need a huge investment—just a smart, affordable path to success.
  3. You don’t need to work endless hours—just structured, productive time.
  4. You don’t lack credibility—the VA Academy certification proves your skills.
  5. You’re not alone—The Ops Lounge community is here to support you.

If you’re ready to ditch the myths and start your journey as a Virtual Assistant, let’s make it happen. The VA Academy is here to help you every step of the way.
